Tunnel effect
Description
Tunnel effect
The tunnel effect refers to the property of a quantum object to cross a potential barrier even if its energy is less than the minimum energy required to cross the barrier. It is a purely quantum effect, which cannot be explained by classical mechanics. For such a particle, the wave function, whose square of the modulus represents the probability density of presence, does not cancel at the barrier, but attenuates inside the barrier.
